Scarborough 最早在大約一千年前由 Viking (維京人) 在 英格蘭 的西北部 North Yorkshire 登陸後逐漸成為一個重要的港口。

中世紀時期，Scarborough 是來自全英格蘭甚至還有歐洲的商人經常聚集的一個海邊重鎮，非常繁華。

Scarborough Fair 在歷史上是一個從 八月十五日開始延續 45天的交易市集。在那個年代持續如此之長的市集是很少見的。後來這個市集逐漸冷清衰落，現在 Scarborough 只是一個默默無聞的小鎮了。

Scarborough Fair 這首歌曲源自於一首古老 (大約作於十三世紀) 的蘇格蘭民間謎歌 (riddle song)。

所謂 ”riddle song”,是指那些民間流傳廣泛，但是不知道作者是誰的歌曲，而且由於人們的相互傳唱，本來的曲調已經改變了很多。

那個年代不像現在有版權的說法，所以歌曲的作者沒有能夠留下姓名。這樣的謎歌由漂流各地的遊唱詩人(bard或shaper)輾轉傳唱。因此年深月久，衍化出許多不同的歌詞版本。

在60年代，Paul Simon（保羅・賽門）與Art Garfunkel（葛芬柯）二重唱將它翻唱、收錄於電影《畢業生》的原聲帶中，很多人以為這首歌叫做 “畢業生”，其實它的名字叫 “Scarborough Fair”.

“Scarborough Fair” 翻譯成很多名字如《史坎博展覽會》or《史坎博羅市集》........等。片中的另一首歌曲《寂靜之聲》也頗有名氣。

《Scarborough Fair》是美國60年代最受大學生歡迎的電影主題曲、1968年奧斯卡獲奬片《畢業生》（達斯汀・霍夫曼主演，其成名作），之後黃鶯鶯 與 莎拉・布萊曼也翻唱過此曲。
